Very few get selected to serve as our bishops and it is a major sacrifice on their end as well.

The ranks are as follows:
1) Sub-deacon
2) Deacon
3) Priest
4) Cor-Bishop
5) Archdeacon
6) Bishop
7) Metropolitan
8) Patriarch

This is not an "Assyrian" terminology! This is how the structure within the Assyrian Church of the East works.

As for the new power or responsibility of a new bishop, there are many. Specifically His Grace Mar Awa was consecrated Bishop of all of California so he will oversee all of California.

Another question that you raised was "why was His Grace Mar Awa still being called an Archdeacon prior to his consecration as a bishop. Well, on November 23, 2008 he was consecrated as an Archdeacon; this is a week before his consecration as a bishop. If you refer back to the 8 ranks above, you will see that they have to become an Archdeacon before they can be consecrated as a bishop.

Also, there are many books out there for those who are interested to learn further about our church. One of my recommendations is a book by Christoph Baumer (Author), H.H. Mar Dinkha (Preface). It is called, "The Church of the East: An Illustrated History of Assyrian Christianity".

I hope that I have answered your questions. Thanks!

"Perhaps you could clarify a few things for me. What does the ordination of a "cor-bishop" entail? Also, upon ordination, what new power/privileges does one receive? If a "cor-bishop" is the rank below a bishop (according to the wiki article anyway), why was His Grace Mar Awa still being called an archdeacon prior to his consecration as a bishop? Lastly, since when did archdeacons have their own special ordination? Is this simply Assyrian terminology? AssyrianPost is like "The One Stop Shop" for reading everything pertaining to the current news of ACOE.

I want to make one note, I think the visit by our Bishops is indeed a very psotiive one. I believe those against ACOE (May God judge them) have wanted to isolate ACOE from the Vatican and weaken the relathionship, by spreading propaganda that stirrs up trouble amongst our people. But I am elated to see that our Patriarchical Council are not falling into the trap setup for them, and forging ahead with maintaining good relathionship with other Chruches, particluar the Catholic church. His Holiness Mar Dinkah (God bless our nation for having such a holy man at the helm) has tried very hard to build relathionships with other Churches, and it would be sad if we had let go of that because of some rumour or propaganda spread to confuse our beloved ACOE members.

This meeting sets the record straight, and it shows that the Catholic Church is willing to engage in real brotherly dialog.

And so far as "Full Communion" even other eastern churches, or eastern rite churches, are not in "full communion" because they continue to have a Patriarch, this is because the Vatican has 2 Codexes, one for Eastern rite, and hence they are allowed to have their own leadership and autonomy through their own Patriarch, while the other Codex is for the western world, like Europe and Latin, where they are in communion based ont he Western Version of the Codex.

"Full communion" is a Thesis yet (some tried and didnt get far) to be proven, it is a theory that cannot work in practice, particulalry for Easter Churches, again, there are Eastern Churches for the last 500 years have yet to revert the Patriarchical seat to a Cardinal seat. Vatican understands very well the intricacies of this issue and hence the need of a Seocnd Codex that accommodates these.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25259538.post-1149658411609552912006-06-06T22:33:00.000-07:002006-06-06T22:33:00.000-07:00Excellent site.
